The Attorney-General and Minister for Education, Hon. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum today officiated at the handing over of curriculum materials on an election for Year 10 students.

The education materials – School Curriculum: Introduction to Elections: A Learning Module for Year 10 Social Science Students – were developed as part of the Fijian Elections Office (FEO) voter education programme.

While officiating at the handing over of the voter education materials in Suva, the AG said Fiji had a very young population who need to be empowered.

“The recent census figures reveal that half of our population is below the age of 27.5 years which means they need to be empowered. They need to be made aware of the democratic processes that lead to them being governed by different political parties. This is a great source of empowerment for them,” the AG said.

The curriculum materials include a textbook, a teachers manual, a mock election kit of a different design, and a full time dedicated website for the voter education programme.

The 2-week course book developed by the FEO consists of five lessons, which culminates with a mock election.

The FEO has printed 20,000 copies of student workbooks to be given to Year 10 Social Science students from Term One this year.

The office will also be giving each school a ballot box, ballot papers and a voting screen. Students will carry out seat allocation.

Approximately 40,000 ballot papers have been printed.
