When the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic took the world by storm, Fiji was not left untouched. While most governments struggled to contain the virus and protect their people, FijiFirst Government tackled the COVID crisis head-on and with efficiency, to keep citizens healthy, secure and safe.
Fiji’s initial closure of borders allowed the country to keep the COVID-19 virus at bay, a significant accomplishment by any measure but at a high economic cost. Countries like Fiji were amongst the most vulnerable to the impacts of the COVID-19 crisis, which disrupted key economic sectors that the country strongly relied upon.
The Fijian economy took a big hit, mainly due to the number of economic processes that ceased to function around the country. However, people who were directly and indirectly affected by the pandemic were aided by the continuous efforts of FijiFirst Government .
Thanks to the Foreign affairs strengthened through FijiFirst Government , many countries and organizations supported Fiji in terms of financial and healthcare assistance. This included medical support, such as vaccines and other medical equipment, and financial support, such as loans and grants, rations and distribution of household packs. Despite the economic and medical hardships faced by the country, FijiFirst Government ensured that the country stay up and running and, to this day, The Government continues to provide vaccines and support, free of cost to all citizens.
In addition, We ensured no civil jobs were lost or pay cuts were made during the trying times. School teachers continued to be paid, despite the shutdown of schools.
Vaccination campaigns are on-going to ensure every Fijian is vaccinated against the deadly Coronavirus.
