A commemoration church service to mark the beginning of the week-long celebrations of Fiji’s 40 years of participation in peacekeeping operations with the United Nations was held in major centres around the country today (10/06/18).

The decision behind the church service was due to the fact that the first contingent that had departed our shores for Lebanon attended a farewell church service on the same date at the Centenary Church.

The service at Centenary in Suva was attended by His Excellency the President Major General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote, former President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, Prime Minister Hon. Voreqe Bainimarama, members of the diplomatic corp, local and international disciplined forces and members of the public.

With the theme ‘Fiji’s Sacrifice for Global Peace’, the commemoration will be the first of its kind to remember those who have served not only in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) but in peacekeeping deployments around the globe.

Fiji has been participating with the UNIFIL since June 1978.
