Acting Prime Minister and Attorney-General, Hon. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum today officiated at the opening of the 3rd Pacific Regional Dialogue on Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and Consultations on the Regional Pacific NDC Hub in Suva. The meeting will provide an opportunity for Pacific Island Countries to share experiences and needs on the implementation of their NDCs. The A-G said the dialogue on NDCs and consultations on the Regional Pacific NDC Hub were two major opportunities to support the implementation of more ambitious NDC action throughout the Pacific, and continue the impressive legacy of achievement shared by Pacific nations in confronting the reality of climate change. “When we realise greater ambition in our NDCs, we also accelerate our progress towards realising the sustainable development goals, as these targets share inherent linkages with one another. So it is in everyone’s interest that we pursue more ambitious NDC action in the Pacific and that we encourage that same spirit of ambition and commitment everywhere else in the world,” the A-G said. The A-G highlighted the need to continue to demand and deliver even stronger NDCs from the global community because the current collective commitments set out in the international NDCs fell short of what was required. “They have the world on track to a catastrophic warming of three degrees or even higher, which would devastate vulnerable nations and people around the world. “Together we are going to utilise this Hub to accelerate flows of public and private finance to every Pacific Island Country – finance of both a concessional and non-concessional nature.” The A-G also highlighted that Fiji had undertaken a Climate Vulnerability Assessment of economic sectors and laid out a game plan for climate-sensitizing our development aspirations over the next ten years. The three day meeting is attended by close to 100 participants from regional countries, organizations, private sector and civil society organizations.
