AG: REVIEW OF NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE UNDERWAY

 In Cost of Living, News

The review of the National Minimum Wage of $2.68 an hour has already started.

This was revealed by the AG Aiyaz-Sayed Khaiyum in Parliament yesterday.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum responded to an oral question raised by the National Federation Party leader Biman Prasad, who asked him to tell the House the timeline for the enforcement of the review as revealed in Parliament on March 14 this year.

SODELPA MP Niko Nawaikula asked when the result of the review would be known.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum responded this would be done once the review was completed.

SODELPA MP Viliame Gavoka asked if the review would factor in the Opposition’s view of $5 an hour. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum responded, “Madam Speaker for any review to be credible it needs to be independent”.

He said anybody could appear before the committee and make their submissions.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum reiterated that the minimum wage was only for those who were unskilled.

He said this included someone who cuts grass, house girls and the unskilled labour force.
