The government is committed to reviving the sugar industry through strategic and ongoing reforms.

This also includes reducing input costs of cane growers to boost sugarcane production.

Since 2009, the government has been subsidizing fertilizer cost with a subsidy of $14.09 per 50kg bag of blended fertilizer.

The cost of a 50kg bag of fertilizer is $45.59 and while growers were charged with a price of $31.50.

To encourage that growers apply the recommended quantity of fertilizer in cane fields, the government further increased the subsidy to $25.59 and allocated $15.35m under the Sugar Ministry’s Fertilizer Subsidy Program in 2017/2018 budget.

With the new subsidy rate, the growers will now only pay $20 per 50kg bag of blended fertilizer.
